Introduction

In preparation for litigation, legal practitioners often have to spend hours of retrieving and studying related past cases, pouring through pages upon pages of court documents to determine the best arguments to present to a judge in order to achieve a desirable outcome.

Challenge 1

The current case retrieval system that the Singapore legal industry is currently using is an archive of cases that serves mainly as record storage. The search function is basic: exact keyword matching to existing records without the highlighting much of anything else.

Challenge 2

In order to use the said system, the legal firm have to bear cost of signups for all the lawyers in their firm for the system’s use, regardless of usage.

This means that some legal firms are forking out costs for their team members who may be concentrating on a different area of legal counselling that do not need access to the information given by the system at all.

Solution

The process of litigation preparation could be further streamlined and productivity increased if there is an enhanced system that allows for similar cases to be picked up and highlighted in a “search engine”-like platform. This lay the foundation for Aria Data Labs to conceive Gavelnet.

My role:

  • App UX/UI design
  • Logo design
  • Product video production (storyboarding, scriptwriting) (In progress)

GAVELNET – Case Retrieval System mockups

Here’s a look at the key design elements of the prototype created for Gavelnet.

The Approach

Platform: Desktop & Laptop/Tablet only

This is yet another app that we decided to make available only on screens with resolutions 7 inches and higher. The context of the application for case retrieval dictates that most of litigation preparation works are done on systems with such resolutions.

Multiple User Collaboration

The idea was for Gavelnet to be used a premium litigation database platform for legal advisory firms to consolidate their cases within their own organisation. That means that Gavelnet has to ensure that it facilitates co-sharing of information between team members of the legal firm, yet secure enough to prevent confidential information from leaking.

As the UI/UX designer of this project, I needed to ensure that the app allows easy onboarding of users into groups or teams within the organisation, yet at the same time ensure that non-team members are directed safely away from accessing information that they are not allowed to.

Highlights

Wireframing

The core function of Gavelnet is its augmented search capabilities. But it also emphasises team collaboration within the legal entity’s ecosystem.

Hence, it has to include a basic Superadmin dashboard that allows onboarding, viewing and removal of multiple non-admin users. On top of that, Gavelnet will need to accommodate for a multiple users co-managing  the same sets of capabilities within a sub-environment in the entire system.

The wireframe below shows how that is possible, with Superadmin access, multiple user onboarding and the shared management of files and folders for customised team setups.

“Measuring” Judgement Outcomes

The unique feature of Gavelnet’s augmented search capabilities is its ability to intelligently capture and plot out sentencing duration from the court’s judgement.

By extracting sentencing duration from each case, Gavelnet would allow users to pickup patterns in the sentencing over a given period of time. They can draw other conclusions from various data from the court documents, such as key factors that significantly affects the sentencing.

All this information gets represented in one single dashboard.

The data is captured directly from the court judgement and then calculated at the backend to produce a summary of information that is then plotted unto the user dashboard.

The “Gavelnet” Logo

Sometimes, a brand that was quickly put together evolved into the definitive identity. The Gavelnet logo started as a mere icon as a placeholder for the mockup. But I decided to work on it further to capture the identity of what Gavelnet is all about. Click through the slides to see the logo evolution.
